An early evening bike accident in Queens ended with a 16-year-old boy in the hospital and police searching for not one but two hit-and-run drivers. The young man, Andre Brandon Gonzales, was riding his bike in front of his grandmother’s house on 143rd Street around 7 PM on May 8th when he was struck by two cars. Eyewitnesses saw both drivers simply cover their faces and keep on driving as if nothing had happened.
EMTs arrived and rushed Gonzales to a nearby hospital. The young victim of this terrible bike accident in Queens sustained a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a broken leg and severe ligament damage.
The boy had a bright future in front of him playing football for John Adams but his family is doubtful that his recovery will be complete enough to allow him to do that. Relatives say the boy is in a tremendous amount of pain.
Media outlets interviewed several residents of the neighborhood and found speeding is common and there have been several “close calls” in which cars have whizzed by children, narrowly avoiding disaster. In fact, several neighbors petition the city to install a speed bump but the proposal was denied.
Police are hopeful that at least one resident will have captured a usable image or images of the drivers on their home security systems. In cases like these, the family would be wise to consult an experienced negligence attorney. Negligence attorneys are knowledgeable in the investigative techniques used to locate and identify a hit and run vehicle. Once the drivers and vehicle owners are identified, the boy will have a strong case for a lawsuit for pain and suffering. In addition, the boy will be entitled to no-fault benefits for medical bills and other health related expenses from the insurance companies for the vehicles that struck him.
