Harrowing Construction Accident in Queens Leaves Three Injured

On Behalf of | Jul 3, 2017 | Construction Accidents

Three men are lucky to be alive today after a terrible construction accident in New York City. Just after 3 in the afternoon on Tuesday, June 20th rescue crews were called to a job site in Queens after a roof collapsed-sending three workers plunging into the darkness below.

The men were working as a crew loading materials onto the roof for future work when the support structures gave out and a significant portion of the roof collapsed. FDNY officers were able to easily extract two of the men and rushed the victims to Elmhurst Hospital. The third man was buried under debris forcing crews to slow their approach and remove rubble piece by piece to avoid injuring the man even further.

It took crews almost three hours to finally free the third victim. He was removed from the accident site alive and listed in serious condition at a nearby hospital.

It’s rare that construction accidents in New York City involve more than one victim but when crews are working together on older, unstable structures or anytime groundwork below grade has involved the potential for multiple injuries and fatalities is always a threat.

No doubt the OSHA and DOB investigations into this latest construction accident in New York City will focus on whether everything necessary had been done to stabilize the roof and if the safe load limit of the structure was exceeded. Under the New York Labor Law, if safety proper safety equipment failed or was not provided, the accident victims could potentially hold the property owner and general contractor liable for the pain and suffering and financial damages associated with their injuries.
