Two people were killed and three others injured earlier this month when an SUV collided with a box truck on the George Washington Bridge. It appears as if all the victims were members of the same family. The investigation into this terrible truck accident in New York City is still ongoing, however, police have released the names of the people killed in the crash: 40-year-old Hector Pedercini and his 5-year-old daughter Marianna.
The names of the three individuals who were have not been released. All three were taken to Colombia-Presbyterian Hospital and listed in serious but stable condition. One of the injured victims is a 1-year-old girl.
News reports show that both vehicles were travelling in the same direction when the SUV (driven by the deceased victim) slammed into the rear end of the box truck. It appears as if the truck may have been stopped in traffic at the time of the crash but NYPD sources are withholding speculation pending the conclusion of the investigation. At least one media outlet is reporting that the family was on their way home from a party in New Jersey at the time.
Deadly truck accidents in New York City are all too common. These large vehicles pose a tremendous threat to drivers and passengers in smaller (and much lighter) vehicles. Because of the truck’s height and size, it is not always possible for the truck driver to be aware of innocent pedestrians or smaller vehicles right beside it. The truck driver might be vigilant at all times and if not, the lack of proper attention can result in horrific injuries. These crashes can have a devastating effect on pedestrians and those inside cars and SUVs.
