Pedestrians were sent scrambling when an awning and a large section of brick façade tumbled off the top of a pharmacy situated within a strip mall in the Bronx earlier this month. The partial building collapse in New York happened at around 1PM and caught everyone on the scene by surprise. Victims were forced to dodge falling debris and narrowly missed being crush by heavy brick.

Investigators arrived within minutes of the 911 report and cordoned the entire area in front of the strip mall off, fearing that more of the building would collapse. It is unclear what caused the brick and mortar to break free but people living in the area told news outlets that the pharmacy had just opened a couple of months ago, leading some to suspect that improper installation of the awning may have had something to do with the near-tragedy.

Thankfully, no one was serious hurt in this partial building collapse in the Bronx though one individual did report minor injuries after the initial assessment at the scene was concluded. It’s unclear what that particular victim’s injuries were but people have suffered broken bones, head trauma, and torn ligaments and tendons in similar accidents in the past.

The property owner and installation company doing the work on the building have the responsibility to reasonably insure that the job was done in a workmanlike manner and that building façade was not disturbed by the work that was done. If the building was not properly inspected after the work was completed, they could be held liable for the victim’s injuries under New York premises liability law. Innocent people that are hurt by another party’s negligence have legal recourse to seek compensation for their injuries, lost time from work and unpaid medical expenses.
