A Truck Accident in Brooklyn Leaves Cyclist Dead

On Behalf of | Dec 25, 2018 | Bicycle Accidents

A fatal truck accident in Brooklyn earlier this month has left a bicyclist dead. The hit and run accident happened late on the night of December 14th. The cyclist was traveling eastbound down Pitkin Avenue in a bike lane when a delivery truck failed to yield while making a right turn. The truck struck the cyclists, dragging the man for several feet, and then drove away as if nothing had happened.

The 21-year-old victim-who worked as a delivery person for a local restaurant-was riding an electric bicycle and wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but was killed instantly.

NYPD investigators swarmed the scene of this latest fatal truck accident in New York City, scouring the area for eyewitnesses and security and traffic camera footage, trying to identify either the truck involved or the driver of that vehicle. If that at fault individual is captured, they’ll likely face several criminal charges in addition to civil action on behalf of the victim’s surviving family members.

Delivery truck accidents in New York are become far too common in the city. Drivers fail to proceed with caution and are often unaware of their surroundings. Indeed, police suspect that the driver of this particular vehicle didn’t even know that he had struck the cyclist. Regardless, failure to yield to a pedestrian or cyclist is a very serious crime that, tragically, ends in serious injuries and death.

While the city continues its attempts at making the street safer for pedestrians and bicyclists throughout New York (including the addition of protected bike lanes and retiming crosswalk signals) it’s clear that the danger is still very real. Fortunately, victims who are injured have the ability to seek compensation for their injuries, lost income, and property damage.
