Pedestrian Accident Leaves Woman Critically Injured

A pedestrian accident in the Bronx left a woman critically injured after a driver failed to yield the right of way, dragged the woman underneath the vehicle, and pinned her against the side of a building.

The terrifying accident happened around 8:30 in the morning on December 27th when a car attempted to turn into a driveway along the 1200 block of Pelham Parkway. The driver either failed to see or failed to yield the right of way to a pedestrian walking along the side of the road. After striking the pedestrian, the car accelerated and smashed into a home, causing substantial damage.

The injured individual was trapped underneath the car and pinned beneath rubble as part of the home collapsed. Rescue crews arrived within minutes and were eventually able to extricate the victim. She was rushed to nearby Jacobi Medical Center and admitted in critical condition.

The building damage was so extensive that the Department of Buildings has to issue a mandatory evacuation order, forcing two families to vacate their homes.

Incredibly, the driver was not issued any summons for this unbelievable pedestrian accident in the Bronx. A full investigation is underway and could result in criminal charges against the driver.

Failure to yield crashes are one of the most common types of pedestrian accidents in New York City-especially those involving turns. While pedestrians have the right of way at intersections and certainly in crosswalks, drivers often either fail to see individuals on foot or simply do not yield, resulting in serious, sometimes fatal injuries. Under New York’s no-fault law, the at-fault vehicle’s insurance company is responsible to pay for all health related expenses and lost wages up to $50,000. This is separate and apart from the lawsuit for pain and suffering that the injured pedestrian can bring.
