January – One of the Worst Months for Bicycle Accidents in New York City

On Behalf of | Apr 8, 2019 | Bicycle Accidents

So far this year has been a bad one for bicyclists in New York. The number of bicycle accidents in New York City in the first 30 days of 2019 has already topped 191. That figure is 20% higher than the number of bicycle accidents in New York over the same time frame last year. If this trend continues, 2019 could be the most dangerous year in recent history for cyclists in New York.

In January, there were almost 15,000 car accidents involving other automobiles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. But, unlike other years in the recent past, where there has been a spike in the number of bicycle accidents in NYC, there’s no one particular “Danger Zone” responsible for the increase. Indeed, data collected by the NYC DOT shows that bicycle accidents are up over last year’s figures in all of the Five Boroughs with Brooklyn North seeing an increase of nearly 71% (41 accidents this year alone).

The only area of NYC that seems to have experienced an actual decrease in bike accidents is the south end of Manhattan which experienced 8 fewer accidents this past month (an 18% drop).

Safety advocates say that the real driver behind the increase in bicycle accidents across New York City this year is failure of motor vehicle operators to follow the traffic laws. While NYPD stats do show a significant number of citations being issued (over 1 million last year), many say that in a collision between a motor vehicle and a bicyclist, the officer will unfairly target the bicyclist involved in the collision, not the driver. This might very well be a case where the law abiding bicyclists are paying the price for the relatively few reckless bicyclists.

Nevertheless, an accident with any kind of motor vehicle could very well leave the bicyclist with permanent devastating injuries.
