A drowning accident in New York City earlier this month highlights the dangers of apartment complex pools in the hot summer sun.
On Monday, July 8th, the FDNY rushed to an apartment complex in Riverdale earlier this month after they received a call that victim had drowned in the swimming pool there. Thankfully, rescuers were able to stabilize and rush the victim to Montefiore Medical Center who was listed in critical condition.
Near-drowning accidents in New York City are more common than you think in the warm summer months as people seek ways to escape the heat. Dangers like backyard pools, hot tubs, and even inflatables can cause near drowning accidents in the blink of an eye. And just because the victims survive near drowning accidents, they may never fully recover. Such accidents can often lead to severe disability including permanent brain damage and loss of mobility and muscle control.
According to a statement to local media outlets, the owner of the apartment complex at which this near drowning accident in New York City occurred, the pool itself is operated by a private club (The Club of Riverdale). The victim (or the representative of the victim’s estate, in case of death) can hold the club legally liable (thus financially responsible) for any injuries associated with the incident in the event the owner or operator of the pool was negligent in the operation of the pool. Damages would include pain and suffering for the injuries, unpaid medical bills and lost time from work from the time of the incident into the future.
There’s no word yet on whether that individual is expected to make a full recovery or not.
