Scary Construction Accident in New York City Leaves Two Men Hanging

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2020 | Construction Accidents

Two construction workers had to be rescued by the FDNY after an accident at a job site in Manhattan earlier this month. This latest construction accident in Manhattan happened on December 13th at a job site along West 118th Street near 5th Avenue at around 9:30 in the morning. The crew was installing siding onto a newly constructed building when the ground beneath the mechanical lift they were using gave way.

The men were working from the platform of a boom lift when the machine toppled-nearly spilling the men to the ground. EMTs responded within minutes of receiving the 911 call and were able to rescue both men after securing the lift. One of the injured victims was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

Had the men not been able to stop themselves from tumbling out of the boom lift’s basket, this accident could have turned tragic. Thankfully, everyone survived. Indeed, an investigation has been launched into exactly how the lift became unstable and whether or not any mandatory safety protocols were violated. By no means, are the property owner and general contractor for the project out of the woods.

If there is a violation of the New York Labor Law, which mandates the use of certain safety equipment, the property owner and general contractor in charge of the project would be held absolutely liable for the injuries the victim’s suffered and the financial consequences of those injuries including but not limited to pain and suffering, lost time from work and other out-of-pocket expenses.
