Fatal Car-Truck Collision in New York Claims Lives of Entire Family

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2020 | Firm News

A young family fell victim to a fatal car-truck collision in New York earlier this month. On August 5th, a family from Pelham Bay was traveling through upstate New York when the vehicle they were in—a small Honda Accord—was struck by an 18-wheel tractor-trailer at around 8:30 in the evening. The impact was so powerful that the little family car was dragged roughly 500 feet down the interstate from the initial collision site.

When EMTs arrived at the scene of the tragedy, they found a 47-year-old man, a ten-year-old boy, and another 14-year-old boy dead in the wreckage.

Five other individuals were injured in the crashed but they are expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the truck—a Canadian man—allegedly could not stop his rig in time upon spotting the stopped traffic ahead of him. Police investigators will likely be digging deep into the trucker to determine if there were any contributing factors to this fatal collision. Many times in such cases investigators find that drivers have been on the road for long hours, have cut corners around safety measures designed to prevent such crashes, or are using substances (such as drugs or alcohol) that affect their perception and reaction speeds.

Surviving family members and the injured victims will be able to file a lawsuit against the driver and owner of the truck along with the company the driver works for in order to recover for pain and suffering of their injuries, lost time from work and any out of pocket expenses related to their injuries.  All the victims of the accident are eligible for no-fault benefits from the insurance company for the car they occupied at the time of the accident which would pay for all heath related expenses and funeral costs.
