Commercial Truck Accident in Brooklyn Claims Life of Woman

On Behalf of | Sep 18, 2020 | Firm News

A woman was killed in a horrific commercial truck accident in Brooklyn late last month. The woman was walking along a stretch of Linden Boulevard near the intersection of Fountain Avenue at around 11 AM when the accident occurred. A large 18-wheel U-Max trailer truck struck the woman—crushing her under the rear wheels of the truck.

EMTs arrived within minutes but it was immediately clear that the woman was dead at the scene. The driver of the truck stayed at the crash site and cooperated with NYPD accident investigators. The individual was allegedly tested for alcohol and illegal substance use. No charges have been filed as yet in relation to this tragic truck accident in New York City. Indeed, it may be difficult to prove any sort of criminality as there were no eyewitnesses to the actual crash, just the aftermath.

Unfortunately, these types of accidents happen often when large multi-ton trucks come into close quarters with pedestrians and bicyclists. These vehicles are so large that the driver doesn’t often see pedestrians in danger until it’s too late. Pedestrians, for their part, often don’t realize that such a large vehicle can change direction so quickly.

While there have been major (and expensive) upgrades to NYC infrastructure in recent years to prevent these types of accidents from happening, until pedestrians and automobile traffic are completely separated, these tragedies will continue to occur.

Keep in mind, that just because a pedestrian may be walking against the red light, the truck or automobile operator has the obligation to avoid striking the pedestrian if at all possible. If not, the driver will also be held liable for the happening of the accident and the pedestrian’s injuries and lost time from work.
