A man is alive after a crazy pedestrian accident in Manhattan early last month and a security camera caught the whole wild event on video. Just before 7 AM on the morning of September 7th an individual was walking along the sidewalk at the corner of West 157th Street and Amsterdam Avenue when a BMW SUV ran out of control, jumped the curbing, and struck them. The large vehicle actually rolled over the individual and they were trapped underneath. Several eyewitnesses came forward to look at the wreck but one man, a local deli owner, rushed into action, pulling the man free from the wreckage and keeping him calm until the EMTs arrived.
Witnesses say the hero had seconds to respond as the SUV was actually witnessed in reverse—backing toward the prone victim.
The man behind the wheel attempted to flee the scene in the damaged vehicle but ended up dumping the car and escaping on foot.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe but non-life-threatening head injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery but this story could have ended much differently had one eyewitness not reacted so quickly to the potential danger.
While it’s difficult to get compensation in hit-and-run cases, this particular one may be easier to solve than others. As mentioned above, the whole terrifying pedestrian accident in New York was caught on video. That video will no doubt make it much easier for investigators to identify the at fault individual. Once the vehicle is identified, the accident victims will be able to file for no-fault benefits (for health related expenses) from the insurance company for the vehicle as well as bring a claim against the owner and driver (once he is identified) for the injuries sustained in the accident.
