An elderly man was killed in a tragic truck accident in New York City earlier this month. The 71-year-old was crossing the street at the intersection of East 183rd and Exterior Streets in the Bronx when he was struck by a tractor-trailer at around 4:00 p.m. on November 13th. The driver of the truck failed to stop at the scene of the accident and fled. The man was left in the roadway, critically injured and lying alone until some passersby happened upon him and called 911.
When the EMTs arrived on scene, they found the man suffering from severe head trauma and blood loss. Although, he rushed to nearby Lincoln Hospital, his injuries were too traumatic and was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The NYPD Accident Investigation Squad is actively investigating and trying to identify the truck and the driver but the public’s help is requested. Anyone who saw the crime is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.
Unfortunately, hit-and-run truck accidents in New York City are more common than you think because many times, the drivers don’t even realize they’ve struck an individual. Sometimes, bystanders have to actually stop the driver from leaving the scene. In this case, it’s possible that the driver did not know that he had even struck the pedestrian. However, that does not absolve the driver from criminal or civil responsibility. If apprehended, the driver of the truck could be facing criminal charges for leaving the scene of an accident as well as a civil lawsuit on behalf of the victim’s surviving family members regardless of whether or not the NYPD chooses to file charges. This lawsuit would be for pain and suffering for the time the gentleman survived after the accident and any unpaid funeral or medical expenses.
