Scaffolding Accident in New York City Injures Two

On Behalf of | Jan 13, 2021 | Construction Accidents

FDNY responders rushed to an emergency call at Hudson Yards in mid-November after witnesses called in a terrifying scaffolding accident in New York. At around noon on the morning of November 14th, the scaffolding on the outside of a building located at 30 Hudson Yards partially collapsed while two men were working atop it. The two men tumbled approximately 20 feet and came to rest atop the roof of a lower structure where they remained stranded and injured until the FDNY arrived.

The men were trapped too high up for the firefighters to affect a ladder rescue and the need for haste eliminated the possibility of rappelling down from the building’s primary roof. Instead, the rescuers cut a hole through the thick shatter-resistant glass at a level closer to the victims (on the 37th floor) and extricated the injured men that way.

Both victims were transported to nearby Bellevue Hospital where they were listed in stable condition.

This isn’t the first scaffolding accident in New York associated with the massive building project at Hudson Yards. Just last year, two men were injured when scaffolding collapsed at 50 Hudson Yards. No doubt accident investigators will be looking for evidence of negligence or disregard for proper safety precautions in this latest case as well.

The injured workers in this accident would be well advised to seek out experienced and competent legal representation for this particular accident.  An experienced attorney will invoke the New York Labor Law, which requires that workers be provided with certain safety equipment (scaffolding is considered a type of safety equipment) and holds the property owner and general contractor for the project absolutely responsible for injuries, lost wages, and more when a piece of safety equipment fails.
