Two women were seriously injured in a terrifying pedestrian accident in Long Island late last month when a truck crashed into a bus stop. The women were waiting under a bus stop canopy when a pickup truck jumped the curb and smashed into the structure. The canopy collapsed on top of the two victims, crushing them and pinning them to the ground.
Video of the truck accident shows the vehicle turning through the intersection when the driver’s door suddenly opens. The vehicle then goes out of control and crashes into the bus stop.
Eyewitnesses rushed to the aid of the victims, lifting the structure off of them and applying first aid—including a tourniquet to one of the victims’ legs. EMTs arrived within minutes—accompanied by police officers. The victims were rushed away to the hospital and the driver of the truck was immediately questioned.
The victims in this case have a tremendous amount of evidence (including eyewitness accounts and video footage) that they could use in court to prove liability and present a solid personal injury case. The devastating injuries sustained by these innocent pedestrians will undoubtedly result in significant monetary recoveries either by out-of-court settlements or a jury verdict. The recovery would be for pain and suffering, lost time from work leading into the future and any medical expenses that were left unpaid by no-fault insurance. By law, as pedestrians, the insurance company for the vehicle that struck these women must provide no-fault benefits for the injured pedestrians which would cover all health-related expenses and up to $2,000 a month for lost wages. These benefits will help the injured individuals support themselves and their families while they recover from the physical and emotional trauma of the pedestrian accident.
