A 16-year-old young man was struck and killed while riding a bicycle through Queens earlier this month. Police were called to the scene of the bicycle accident in New York City on June 10th when eyewitnesses reported that a car crossed a double yellow line attempting to pass another when it struck the boy and sped off without stopping.
EMTs arrived within minutes and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital. He was listed in critical condition and died from his injuries a day later. Police immediately launched an investigation and reached out to the public for help—requesting anyone with any information about the driver of the Toyota Celica to come forward.
Meanwhile, the family members of the boy are left grieving.
The rates of hit and run bicycle accidents in New York City seem to be increasing. Thankfully, so too does the rates with which these crimes are solved. Cellphone video, security and traffic camera footage, and social media have all played a part in this increase—which is good news for victims and their surviving family members.
When an at fault driver is discovered, both the driver and owner of the vehicle can be held financially responsible for all losses including pain and suffering for the time the boy survived, future lost earnings if the boy had a job and was contributing to the family household and unpaid medical and funeral expenses regardless of whether the NYPD has enough evidence to press charges.
While such a compensation claim won’t do anything to heal the emotional void created by the loss of a loved one, it can bring solace to the family members through the stages of grief of this tragic death. During this painful time, it would be wise to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney to help guide the family through the complicated legal process.
