Man Killed in Fatal Bicycle Accident in New York City

by | Jul 30, 2021 | Bicycle Accidents

A young man was killed earlier this month in a bicycle accident in New York City involving an automobile driven by an individual who fled the scene after the crime occurred. The 24-year-old victim was biking along East Houston Street on the Lower East Side around 11 PM on the evening of July 9th when he was struck by a black Subaru.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying in the street with severe trauma to his body. EMTs rushed the victim to nearby Bellevue Hospital but his injuries proved to be fatal.

Police investigators recreating the accident from eyewitness testimony and evidence collected at the crash site say that the Subaru was traveling East when it hit the victim who was crossing the street at the time. Investigators will be also looking for videos and surveillance tapes from local traffic and security cameras in order to identify the vehicle and the driver.

A sizeable percentage of hit-and-run bicycle accidents in New York City are solved after the fact via thorough investigations. If you’ve been hit by a careless driver who has fled the scene of your accident, you can help your case by collecting as much evidence at the scene as you can immediately after the collision—including photo and video evidence of the car that hit you. This evidence is critical when proving the identity of the vehicle and demonstrating liability in a personal injury lawsuit. Also bear in mind that a bicyclist is considered a pedestrian and as such, the injured bicyclist is eligible for no-fault benefits from the insurance company for the vehicle which struck the bicycle which will pay for medical bills and some lost wages.  This is separate and apart from the lawsuit for the injuries.
