Pedestrian Accident in The Bronx Claims Life of Woman Visiting Family

On Behalf of | Nov 15, 2021 | Pedestrian Accidents

A woman was killed as she was exiting her car on her way to visit family members. This shocking  pedestrian accident in New York City was caused by a pick-up truck driver who was high on cocaine and traveling at more than three times the posted speed limit at the time of the crash. The driver lost control of his truck, veered into a protected bike lane, and smashed into 13 cars parked at the side of the street. His vehicle continued on to crush a young woman who was retrieving items from the backseat of her car.

NYPD officers responded to the crash immediately and found the woman injured but still alive. EMTs rushed her to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital but her injuries proved too horrific for her to overcome.

The cops detained the driver for questioning and suspected he was under the influence of narcotics. Testing and testimony from the driver himself uncovered that he had been using cocaine prior to the crash and was allegedly suffering delusions that he was being chased through the streets.

Charges were filed against the driver but criminal courts do little to help surviving family members with the emotional and financial burden the loss of a loved one creates. Civil law allows these individuals to seek compensation from at fault individuals whose carelessness, recklessness, or negligence contributed to the death of their family members. In such cases, families can be awarded monetary compensation for hospital and funeral costs, emotional pain and suffering, and even lost future financial support.
