A fatal car/truck collision in New York claimed the life of an elderly man earlier this month not far beyond city limits. The crash happened at around 5 PM on November 17th at a busy intersection along route 303. The crash involved three vehicles in total and police investigators had to work hard just to figure out what caused the deadly crash.
Reports from the accident scene state that a loaded semi-truck smashed into a Subaru in the intersection. The smaller car was then pushed by the mass of the commercial truck into an oncoming Ford Transit van. When the chaos quieted, the 83-year-old driver of the Subaru was rushed to a nearby hospital along with the female passenger of the vehicle. The driver later succumbed to his injuries. Additionally, the occupants of both of the other vehicles were injured.
Local police investigators made pleas to the public for any witnesses to come forward and shed light on the terrible crash as the investigation team tried to piece together exactly what happened. It appears as if one or more of the vehicles entered the intersection illegally (without the right of way) but until the investigation is concluded, police were unwilling to place any potential blame.
Commercial truck accidents in New York are incredibly common as these large vehicles domineer the roadways and drivers sometimes have difficulty controlling these multi-ton behemoths in high-traffic areas. Physics, visibility, sometimes driver inattention and the simple fact that it takes longer to maneuver and react with these large vehicles play a part in these types of crashes and, unfortunately, there are often very serious injuries and many times fatalities because of the force of the collisions.
