A woman was injured in a strange car accident in Queens earlier this year and is now seeking restitution from Amazon. The victim was sitting in a parked car, waiting for her husband to return, when the vehicle was smashed into by a van. The driver of the van then pulled into traffic and sped away. While this seems like any other hit-and-run accident in New York City, there’s a twist. The commercial van involved in this particular crash was an Amazon logistics vehicle.
The woman and her husband chased after the van driver and he eventually stopped after the NYPD got involved. An investigation into the van-car crash in Queens found that the entire incident was caught by a business’s surveillance camera. The video clearly shows exactly what happened as the Amazon vehicle rammed into the stationary car and then sped off.
The victim suffered relatively minor injuries to her head and neck but the damage to her vehicle was such that the family was left without personal transportation for days. She told media outlets that she repeatedly contacted Amazon to see if their insurance would pay for her damages but when the company failed to respond in what she thought was an adequate time frame, she filed a personal injury lawsuit in court.
Her lawsuit against Amazon is seeking damages not only for her injuries and the replacement value for the repair parts needed to put her car back on the road but also financial compensation for the inconvenience the Amazon employee caused the family.
While the defendant in this lawsuit is a mega-million-dollar multinational company, the premise is the same: if an employee’s actions result in harm to an individual, the company—no matter the size—is responsible for actions of its employees and is liable for the damages.
