A man was seriously injured in a terrifying bicycle accident in New York late last month. The victim, a 51-year-old man, was riding his bicycle in Franklin Square on January 2nd when he was struck by an automobile. The victim lay in the street until emergency crews arrived. They immediately treated him for head trauma and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
The driver of the automobile, a 64-year-old man, stayed at the scene of the bicycle accident and was allegedly cooperating with police investigators. It is unclear at this time whether any criminal charges will be filed in this case.
You wouldn’t think there would be such a high number of bicycle accident in New York City during the winter months. With snow and ice and other foul weather, you’d expect cyclists to either stay home or seek alternative transportation methods. While many do, there are some who brave the elements because cycling is their only method of transportation. Unfortunately, the number of bicycle accidents per month during the winter season stays level despite of the decreased traffic. This is because contributing factors like visibility, poor street conditions, and early sunsets make the streets more hazardous for the fewer cyclists that take to them.
It’s important to keep in mind that in the majority of bicycle accidents in New York City involving automobiles, the driver is at fault for the collision not the cyclist. This means that the injured victims can, in most cases, seek financial compensation for their injuries, lost wages, and pain and suffering from at fault parties. In addition, Under New York’s no-fault laws, all health-related expenses incurred by the bicyclist will be paid by the automobile’s insurance company regardless of fault.
