Authorities Fail to Fix Ceiling Collapse in New York City Public Housing

A Bronx family says they lived in fear for weeks after a ceiling collapse in New York City public housing-bathing with one eye on the ragged hole above them. The Alequin family told reporters that the bathroom ceiling in their Bronx apartment collapsed-right on top of a family member-after several months of black mold buildup.

The ceiling collapse left a gaping hole above the shower, rimmed by ragged sheetrock, peeling paint, and black mold. It also left the plumbing of the apartment above exposed.

However, when the family reached out to The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) immediately after the Bronx ceiling collapse, they received no help whatsoever. They called daily but nobody came to fix the potentially dangerous living situation. Family members were forced to patch the hole themselves with a tarp.

When reporters found out about the ceiling collapse, they visited the family at their Claremont Rehab Two housing complex. Upon seeing the unsafe and unsanitary conditions created by the Bronx apartment ceiling collapse, the news agency reached out to NYCHA. Within two hours a repair crew arrived to erect a temporary fix. However, a complete repair would take another week.

For New Yorkers living in public housing, NYCHA is charged with the maintenance and repair of the apartments and keeping the residents safe. Unfortunately, their failure to respond to complaints in a timely fashion has been reported in the media time and time again. While this particular public housing accident didn't cause any serious injuries, a ceiling collapse is no small matter. In other cases, much more serious injuries have been reported. In addition, there is the danger of exposed plumbing, wiring, and other hazards.
